Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO)
Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO) occurs when one or more of the veins of the retina gets blocked, usually resulting in painless visual loss in one eye. Common causes of RVO include high blood pressure and hardening of blood vessels due to high blood glucose levels and high cholesterol levels. Less common causes include certain blood disorders which result in increased tendency to blood clotting and systemic inflammatory conditions.
Macular oedema (swelling) can occur in RVO, which may require eye injections (intravitreal therapy) usually in the form of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF). In some cases of RVO, retinal LASER are performed to reduce the likelihood of glaucoma (elevated eye pressure).
